 Balogné Bérces Katalin 1998-ban végzett az ELTE Angol nyelv és irodalom szakán, majd az ELTE Angol Nyelvészet Doktori Programján folytatta tanulmányait doktorandusz hallgatóként. 2006-ban summa cum laude minősítéssel védte meg "Strict CV Phonology and the English Cross-Word Puzzle" c. PhD értekezését, mely 2008-ban megjelent a VDM Verlag Dr. Müller kiadó sorozatában. Kétszer elnyerte a Magyar Állami Eötvös Ösztöndíjat, és 2003-ban három hónapos vendégkutatói státust kapott a londoni SOAS Nyelvészet Tanszékén. 2006-ban Szentgyörgyi Szilárddal közösen pályázatot nyert "The pronunciation of English" (Az angol nyelv kiejtése) címmel a HEFOP Bölcsész Konzorcium új alapképzési (BA) tananyagfejlesztési projektje keretén belül tankönyv (http://mek.oszk.hu/04900/04910/) és digitális tananyag elkészítésére.

 This coursebook has emerged from a series of seminar handouts and my notes from various readings, which I gradually collected as teaching material to be used in the one-term elective dialectology seminar I started as an experiment at the Department of English, Pázmány Péter Catholic University, in spring 2006. It immediately turned out that my initial conception that this topic is very much in demand among the students was right: the course continued to be considerably popular in the terms to come. |

This book provides an overview of the accents and dialects of the English language. Its primary target audience is advanced (especially BA) students of English, who have a pretty good command of (standard) English and some background knowledge of English pronunciation and grammatical terminology. The first half of the book surveys the major regional dialects of English, in comparison to the standard varieties, concentrating on pronunciation differences. Then the book takes the differences between Standard British English and Standard American English under scrutiny: besides pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and spelling differences are also discussed. Each chapter concludes with questions and exercises for revision and practice, followed by lists of recommended further reading and electronic links, all meant to motivate the students to do further browsing and research.
Katalin Balogné Bérces is a Lecturer in English Linguistics at Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE) and teaches various courses on English phonology, syntax and dialectology.
