Nagy Péter Kristóf, az amerikai angol nyelvnek a magyar oktatási rendszerben (illetve pontosabban a középiskolai angol nyelvoktatásban) betöltött szerepét és helyzetét elemző, tehát a nyelvtanítás tárgykörében végzett kutatása eredményeképpen létrejött könyve olyan kérdéscsoport vetületeit feszegeti, melynek megfelelő kezelését a hazai angol nyelvoktatás gyakorlati megközelítése már régóta nem halogathatná. Ennek elvi alátámasztását a könyv elején található három hipotézisben olvashatjuk, melyek közül a harmadik alapján a diákok általában (és a felmérés tanúsága szerint is) sokkal nagyobb mértékben találkoznak, azaz kerülnek kapcsolatba az angol nyelv amerikai változatával, mint annak brit verziójával. 

The Importance of the Study

George Bernard Shaw said that America and Britain are two nations separated by their common language. Hungarian teachers of English appear to take the dominance of British English for granted. The reason for this is inexplicable if the growing amount of influences we are exposed to from the United States of America is taken into consideration. Still, it seems to be an unwritten law in Hungary that teachers are supposed to teach British English. In this study I would like to call other teachers’ (my colleagues’) attention to the importance of American English, since Britain is not the country any more that dominates the world, for a couple of decades now it has been the United States of America that has had a great influence on the whole of Europe including Hungary.
